The bold experiment of making this match admission free was seriously handicapped when the local paper failed to publicise that it was in fact free admission, claiming they were not aware. This despite the fact that it was prominently listed on the web site and on the club forum. John Mackie in for Jim McFarlane who received an injury on Saturday.

Urchins kicked towards the windmill end of the ground, but after Danny Glozier had opened up the Staines defence with a long pass up to Kris Lee, the joint efforts of Sargent and Newton broke up the move, and Staines came forward strongly. Donny Barnard lost possession inside his own half, which gave Charles-Smith the opportunity to hammer in a hard shot, which cannoned off of John Purdie for a corner. Another Cook shot, this time being blocked by Barnard, again for a corner and for a time Staines looked likely to open the scoring as they surged forward, with Lewis Cook and Leigh Mason prominent in most of their moves.

A good opening for Urchins came when Kris Lee found space on the left and sent over a low cross, which no one could get onto and the ball rolled out of play, whilst another Lee inspired move again saw a long run down the left side, before Nugent tackled to concede the corner, which Boateng took, but played the ball short to Glozier, whose centre was headed out by Flitter. A long ball by Elliot Styles reached Kris Lee, whose shot was deflected out for a corner by Allaway, Tomlinson’s corner being punched away by the keeper. A Glozier inspired move saw Lee’s header well saved by keeper Allaway who tipped the shot around the post, with Boateng’s corner coming to nothing.

At the other end a Cook free kick saw Brightley punch the ball out, but it was returned by Mason and John Mackie hammered it way upfield. Then it was Parker finding Lee, who touched back to Glozier and the resulting cross found Kris Lee, who brought the ball down well and although he rounded Nugent, he could not get his shot in, but Donny Barnard quickly gained possession from the clearance and played the ball back, where Allaway punched out for a corner.

Staines almost caught the home defence out when Charles-Smith moved on to a right wing cross, and his header saw Brightley make an excellent save, tipping the shot around for a corner, which Newton took and Mackie cleared. Tomlinson played a long pass out to Parker, who was clear only to be blatantly pulled back, the referee electing to allow play to continue. Green and Boateng combined for Des to cross the ball, which found the alert Lee whose shot was turned around the post by Allaway for another corner, which once again was played short and nothing came of it. A free kick by Sargent was intercepted by Styles who quickly switched the play upfield to Lee and then on to Parker, who raced in on goal but hit his shot into the side netting. Shortly before half time a Boateng cross was headed out for a corner by Flitter but Tomlinson’s corner was held by Allaway.

At half time many Urchins came into the shop, still trembling in terror from the amazing pitch invasion by the world’s oldest football hooligan at Horsham, but Trigger and Minty did a good job of calming them down by persuading them that the only cure was to buy a scarf. Whilst outside, Max gave away the highest ever jackpot prize, £150.

The second half got off to a stuttering start when Charles-Smith needed lengthy attention following a midfield collision, whilst Des Boateng was singled out for three disgraceful tackles, first a two footed challenge from Mason, who was booked, followed by another from Toppin, who was booked, and then another by Cook, who was lucky to escape a red card. Not surprisingly Des Boateng had to be substituted shortly afterwards, the EastSide showing their displeasure as the lack of protection afforded by the referee. Staines tended to concentrate on defence at all costs, but still looked dangerous when they came forward, Tomlinson having to head out a cross from the left for a corner, with Mackie then doing the same to concede a second corner, but most of the play was at the Staines end, with a Barnard centre being touched out for a corner, which Tomlinson took and Gordon cleared. The ball was played straight back again to Lee, who won a corner out on the right, which Tomlinson took and Flitter headed away. Staines broke away and a good run by Newton saw Brightley made another excellent save, diving at the player’s feet as he prepared to shoot. Janney then picked out Parker who raced goalwards, just beat Allaway to the 50-50 ball, collided with the keeper in so doing, the ball running loose to Dean Green who neatly slotted it into the net, only for the referee to blow his whistle as the ball was en route to goal and award a dropped ball. The keeper needed lengthy attention, and soon afterwards was replaced by reserve keeper Courtnage. A Green centre went out for a corner, which Tomlinson took, and in the resulting scramble the ball was eventually hacked away upfield. A Glozier free kick saw John Mackie crash his header inches over the bar, and when Barnard played the ball into the middle, Janney raced clear, only to put his shot high over the bar with only Courtnage to beat. Jamie Richards and Richard Goddard came on and Richards was soon in action, being chopped down in full flight, with Glozier’s free kick just eluding the joint efforts of Goddard and Mackie. Surprisingly, given the length of the many stoppages, only six minutes were added on by the referee, and Urchins had to settle for just the one point.
