Match Report by Tony Middleton
A crowd approaching one thousand turned out for the Urchins first home match of the season, against a West Ham side with six internationals in their line up, including Czech keeper Marek Stech. In bright sunshine, Urchins began well, attacking the windmill end of the ground, and an early goal looked likely when Mark Janney fed a neat pass through to Kris Lee, who was pulled up for offside as he homed in on goal. Harry Elmes threatened with his first touch, but was tackled on the edge of the area by Ngala, the ball running back to Lee, who sent a good pass out to the left where Michael Brothers cut in and cracked his shot wide of the far post. A bright start, but Irons came back strongly, Hines soloing through the middle and and being tackled by Purdie, the ball running out to Jeffery who hit his shot wide.

Mark Janney needed lengthy treatment following a very late and completely mistimed tackle, after he had sent Elmes away, play being halted, and Fletcher's free kick finding no one. Dale Brightly had his first real save when he had to race out to stop Hines, who had been slotted through by Davis, and then followed the best move of the match when Elmes and Cross combined well to find Kris Lee, who hit his shot narrowly wide from an equally narrow angle. Ricahrd Halle picked out Janney but his cross was well held by Stech.

West Ham took the lead on 21 minutes when JUNIOR STANICAS Stanicas soloed his way through the middle and scored with a low shot past Brightly.

Urchins could have been level within seconds, when Stech made an excellent diving save from Purdie, and Stech then followed this up with another spectacular save from Lee's header.A fine solo run by Halle led to a neat pass to Elmes and thence to Janney, with Stech plucking the cross out of the air, whilst Brightly made a good save when Stanicas broke through and Fitgerald hit the rebound wide. Stech kept West Ham ahead with yet another fine save, when he had to rush out to stop Elmes, wtih Ngala completing the clearance, to allow the visitors to go in one up at the interval.

The club shop was full of activity at half time, as hundreds swarmed in to take full advantage of the massive reductions, but many were disappointed to find that all thongs had sold out before the start. The last Toomey shirt was sold - the buyer was so excited that he rushed out of the shop and left his change behind, (come back at the next home match and collect it please).

Numerous changes at half time for the Urchins, with almost a competely different line up, and some fluidity was lost, whilst at the same time the visitors came far more into the match, with ZAVON HINES putting the Irons two up with a spectaculer shot from the left, following a good build up on the other side of the pitch. It soon became three nil when JACK JEFFERY created space for himself and turned sharply to hit a good shot past Brightly.

Shane Oakley looked dangerous and was twice thwarted by a most impressive looking Stech, and it was Stech again who saved when Adam Parker played Oakley through, but with Urchins applying some pressure towards the end, it was fitting that SHANE OAKLEY got the goal he deserved, when he finished off a corner with a hard left footed shot from a very tight angle.
