HORNCHURCH 1 MAIDSTONE 2
Simon Parker came into the starting line up for Dean Green, out with an injury. After dominating the first match, Urchins struggled to find any form of rhythm in the replay. Maidstone started stronger, and Pinnock played a long ball out to the right wing, with Dale Brightly holding the resulting cross comfortably. Urchins could have taken advantage when they were awarded a free kick in midfield, which was taken quickly and which gave Kris Lee a scoring chance, but Walker held the shot, whilst a Mark Goodfellow pass to Simon Parker looked dangerous when Simon neatly slotted the ball through to Kris Lee, who raced clear but was pulled up for offside, a none too popular decision. Lee Brown then sent over a good cross and Kris Lee’s first time shot deflected out for a corner, which Andy Tomlinson swung over, the ball going harmlessly across goal with no one able to reach it. At the other end, Andy Martin played a good centre over to Pinnock, and Donny Barnard did well to get in a quick challenge, conceding a corner, which Brightly held in good style. Urchins had a good chance to go ahead when Simon Parker played Mark Janney through, but Walker came out well to narrow the angle and save with his feet. Tomlinson fired a shot just wide form the edge of the area, and a first time volley by Craig Thompson brought an excellent diving save from Dale Brightly, who tipped the ball around the post for a corner which Bradbrook swerved across, and which Styles cleared. Urchins looked the sharper and went close when Parker’s shot from Brown’s centre was saved by Walker, but as half time approached they began to lose momentum. Bradbrook sent over another corner, which Purdie cleared and the ball was played up field to Styles, who won a free kick. Barnard took the kick and sent in an excellent ball, which managed to elude everyone as it dropped right in front of goal and then bounced out. A Janney cross was returned as far as Curley whose follow up shot was blocked by a defender, and Maidstone twice broke clear, the first time when Pinnock blazed the ball high and wide, and the second time when Thompson wasted a good chance by shooting hurriedly and well wide of the goal. But in the third minute of the two minutes added on for stoppages, the ball was played into the goalmouth, where it bobbed about until ELLIOT BRADBROOK touched it home. Maidstone had two successive corners following the interval, both of which were taken by Martin, and Brightly held the ball as it came over on the second occasion, having touched the first one over the bar. Styles then placed a good pass in front of Lee Hodges, and although Saunders tackled, the ball came back to Hodges who hit his shot wide. A Purdie free kick saw Goodfellow head wide of the goal as Urchins pushed everyone forward, but they almost conceded a goal when Lloyd Blackman hit a good free kick narrowly wide. Mark Janney sent over a good free kick but Kris Lee just failed to reach the ball, which ran out of play, and Lee next found Hodges out on the left and his centre was headed back again by Saunders to Janney whose cross went out for a corner. Tomlinson put the ball over and Lacy headed powerfully away. Janney made good ground on the right before putting the ball into the middle when Parker was thwarted by Andy Martin, whilst Kris Lee saw his header from Barnard’s cross saved by Walker. A Hodges free kick saw both Purdie and Goodfellow move up and the ball went out for a corner, which Hodges swung in towards the goal and Walker saved well. Ant Bodle came on and won a corner, which was played short to Blackman, and from the centre JAMES PINNOCK was left unmarked and scored with a well placed header. Two down and Urchins began to press forward, and went close when Parker sent Janney away on the right, and the resulting cross just eluded Raphael Sylvester. But with one minute left, Brown’s long throw was played away for a corner, Hodges sent the ball over, and ROSS WALL hit a fine shot through a mass of defenders. The referee only added three minutes on for stoppages, and Urchins swarmed all over the visiting goal, but the closest they came was when Ross Wall cut in from the left and saw his shot touched out for a corner. Hodges sent over an inswinger and Walker did well to hold the ball under the bar. Maidstone were now looking very ragged but managed to hold out amid constant pressure, and they now travel to Swindon Supermarine in the next round. |
