CANVEY 3 HORNCHURCH 2
Urchins kicked into the gale, towards the river end, in the first half, and were also hampered by a heavy shower which swept down the pitch, but almost scored in the first few seconds, when West mistimed his clearance, and Lee Brown quickly sent Simon Parker through. Simon turned the ball inside to Elliot Styles, whose shot rebounded out to Fiston Manuella whose follow up was deflected over the bar, and Tomlinson’s corner was eventually cleared by Patten. Canvey used the gale to their advantage and John Purdie had to concede a corner when Mustafa’s cross threatened to swerve in. A Dave Lee free kick found Gordon, who hit his shot over the bar, and Urchins came back with Parker winning a corner, which Tomlinson took, and John Purdie’s glancing header skimmed the post. Manuella cleared a Dave Lee corner – Dave Lee took all the free kicks and corners for the home side – and Tomlinson blocked the follow up shot from Gordon. Hornchurch took the lead when Lee Brown played a long ball up field and Janney ran quickly along the right and then centred, for SIMON PARKER to place the ball firmly into the net. Shortly afterwards, Parker won another corner and Tomlinson’s swerving kick was headed out by Chris Moore. Back at the other end, a Dave Lee corner was played out as far as Fanibuyan whose return shot was saved by Brightly. Frank Curley then broke up an attack and launched the ball forward to Tomlinson who touched on to send Parker away on the left, but Simon’s low cross into the goalmouth saw the ball elude Ross Wall and roll out of play. A Purdie free kick found Manuella whose header was cleared off the line for a corner, which Tomlinson again took and Elliot Styles came up to head narrowly wide. Canvey forced three successive corners, with Curley clearing the first, Purdie the second, and Dale Brightly holding the third, and he played the ball up to Billy Coyne who sent Ross Wall away on the left. Ross narrowly avoided a lunging tackle, which, had it connected, would have resulted in a penalty, but it was enough to put him off his stride and the ball ran out of play. Right on half time, Styles crossed for Simon Parker, whose shot hit the post. A one nil lead at half time looked good, especially as the gale would be in their favour, but the wind had dropped during the interval, and the gale had disappeared up the Thames. Hornchurch could have increased their lead within a minute of the restart when Parker raced through but the ball deflected off Capelton for a corner. Tomlinson floated the ball over and Manuella’s shot was saved by Capelton. A Dave Lee corner was then partly cleared and Fanibuyan followed up with a good shot which Brightly saved. Urchins had another good chance when Ross Wall sent Mark Janney away, but Mark hit his shot wide of the advancing Capelton and also wide of the post. A minute later Wall won a corner and Tomlinson’s kick found Styles, whose header was just over the bar. Canvey came back and won two corners, with Wall eventually clearing the danger, whilst a high centre from Mustafa found Davidson homing and, and Brightly made an excellent save from Craig’s close range shot. Canvey brought on Jay Curran and Leon Antoine and this proved to be the turning point, as within a few minutes Canvey were level. A high cross from the right, Brightly appeared to lose the ball in the glare of the floodlights, and could only punch the ball away, and CRAIG DAVIDSON followed up to score on 67 minutes. Two minutes later, another cross and this time the ball went for a corner which Dave Lee took once again and LEON ANTOINE took advantage of some loose defending to place the ball into the net. Hornchurch replied right away, when Ross Wall raced through and was brought down. No card was waved, although the defender was last in line, but MARK JANNEY calmly slotted home the penalty, with a delighted Max giving a live commentary to Time Radio. Andy Tomlinson was harshly booked whilst the referee took no action when Simon Parker was the victim of a bad tackle, with the result that he had to go off and was replaced by Kris Lee, with Donny Barnard also coming on, for Fiston Manuella. Within a minute Canvey went ahead, when Billy Coyne conceded a corner, Dave Lee swerved the ball over, and Brightly punched it out for another corner. Dave Lee again took the kick and once again Brightly seemed to lose the ball in the floodlights, allowing JAY CURRAN to head the ball home for what proved to be the winning goal. Urchins almost replied when Styles headed a Tomlinson corner over, whilst another Dave Lee corner at the other end was cleared by Tomlinson. Sam Higgins came on to make his debut, replacing Ross Wall, but the closest Hornchurch came was when Purdie sent over a good cross to Kris Lee, whose shot was held by Capelton. Canvey had one further chance, again from a Dave Lee corner, and then held out comfortably for the three minutes of stoppage time. |
