Excellent organisation and hospitality from the home officials, who made this a memorable occasion. Urchins, with Biased Bob stationed firmly behind the goal, started well, and took the lead on 8 minutes, Michael Brothers taking up the running near the half way line on the right side, making ground and then slotting the ball inside to DES BOATENG, who wriggled his way past three defenders and fired the ball low into the net. Staines came back quickly, Farrell’s throw finding Ventour, whose shot crashed against the post. Staines began to gain control of the midfield, and took the lead when NICK WHITE powered through to score which a hard drive. White could have increased the lead when he found himself in a good position and his shot cannoned back off the bar. A free kick rebounded off the wall, and the next free kick, in a similar position, taken by NICK WHITE, also rebounded off the wall – straight into the net. Another free kick, three minutes later, and this time ASTON VENTOUR got the final touch to propel the ball across the line. Three one and not looking at all good, but in stoppage time, Curley’s long ball found ROSS WALL, who raced goalwards, held off two defenders, and crashed the ball home. Half time and Urchins came back out looking for the equaliser, and it almost arrived immediately, Ross Wall’s fierce hooked shot being saved by Fisher on the line. Urchins came forward in numbers, and Ross Wall saw his shot cannon back off the bar. Michael Brothers created havoc with a long throw into the area, where Wall turned and Fisher made another excellent save. Back down the other end, and Bowditch saved at the feet of Dwyer, whilst Ventour and White both went close, but Staines were increasingly relying on breakaways in the face of an incessant wave of attacks. Urchins levelled when another Brothers long throw found ROSS WALL who made no mistake with a hard drive through a packed defence, but inside a minute some slack marking left the right side wide open and the ball was played into the middle where DOMINIC DWYER homed in, and although Bowditch parried the shot, the ball rolled goalwards and Dwyer got there first to give Staines the lead once again. It was now all out attack, Fisher again saving from Wall, again from a Brothers throw. Urchins supporters were justifiably angry when Michael Brothers burst through and was twice pulled back, the referee missing both, the latter being right on the edge of the area, and a Goddard cross saw Richards fire over. With pressure now non-stop, a free kick was pumped deep into the area and JAMIE RICHARDS hammered the ball home, to the delight of the majority of the supporters inside the ground. Staines defended in depth, but again broke away, Bowditch saving from Preddie. Fisher saved from Richards, and then from Wall, then from Goddard, and in the final few seconds a massive clearance upfield found Dwyer unmarked with only Bowditch to beat, but the keeper did just enough to prevent a goal. And so on to penalties – no extra time – why not? A previous final at Slough had gone to extra time, and a massive thunderstorm had broke over the ground, and the match was almost called off – since then it has always been straight to penalties. Urchins went first, and JAMIE RICHARDS took a long run up and hammered the ball to the left of Fisher – one nil Staines next, and up stepped captain Chris Robinson, a long run up, and a massive metallic clang as the ball came out off the right post. RICHARD GODDARD next – a slight shorter run up but the result was the same, the ball hitting the back of the net before the keeper could more. Two nil CHRIS ‘TED’ DAY – a very short run up, just a couple of paces, but the well placed shot went to the left of Bowditch and into the net. Two one NICK JUDD – a short run up, and the ball again went to the keeper’s left. Three one, and looking good KERIAN PREDDIE – another short run, and a fine shot to the right. Three two And so on to DANNY GLOZIER who casually fired the ball low and hard to the keeper’s left, to loud chants of Greenie from the terracing. Four two and looking very good. It was all down to Nick White, who had already scored twice. Up he strode, a hard shot to Bowditch’s right, and a magnificent diving save. Four two, and Bowditch was swamped by the rest of the team. On to the presentation – and the announcer read out the names of the entire squads – match officials first, followed by a dejected home side, followed by the Urchins – and Michael Ramkin held up the cup. Almost ten pm. But who cared about the time? |
