The Urchins welcome Phoenix Sports to the Bridge on Saturday with both sides looking to cement their places in the top 5.  The Urchins have been a little inconsistent over the last few weeks having been unable to put back to back wins together since their wins over Soham Town Rangers and Heybridge Swifts back in late February.  But we have seen this across all the top sides as we approach the nervy business end of the season when most teams are either looking for promotion or trying to avoid relegation.

Hornchurch guaranteed themselves a play-off spot following last week’s result and currently sit 3rd in the table.  They’ll be looking to maintain the 2 point gap they have on 4th placed Thurrock and hopefully close on 2nd placed Maldon & Tiptree who are 3 points ahead.

Last time out Hornchurch overcame a tricky encounter at Waltham Abbey eventually running out 1-0 winners courtesy of an 84th minute header from Elliot Styles.

Phoenix Sports were the pacesetters in the division and topped the league throughout the early months but a slump in form saw them slip down the table.  However, a resurgence over the last 10 games has seen them move from 11th back into the top 5.  The final play off place is incredibly tight with 5th placed Phoenix Sports separated by only 6 points from 10th placed Aveley.  A draw for Phoenix will guarantee they stay in the top 5 but a defeat will see them drop to 6th if there is a winner in the Bowers & Pitsea and Haringey Borough match – these sides sit immediately below Phoenix in the table in 6th and 7th respectively.

Prior to last Saturday’s surprise 2-1 reverse at home to Soham Town Rangers, Phoenix had won 8 of their previous 9 so are on a good run of form.  Only Brightlingsea Regent head them in the last 6 form table.
