Match Report by Tony Middleton
The rumour that Jordan Bostock was likely to
play pulled in a crowd three times as large as normal. The Urchins came out onto
the pitch, and acknowledged the cheers of the large crowd, then discovered that
the cheering was coming from the rest of the Urchins players who had just come
in from training. Jordan was immediately in the action, taking a free kick in
the first few seconds, but he sliced the ball into the group of players watching
from the terraces. It was Maldon, led by the vastly experienced Tommy Lee, who
made the first goal attempt, Burton hammering in a shot which Madden saved at
full stretch. Urchins soon came into the game and Bostock inch perfect through
pass to Ket on the right wing saw Ket round Trimm and cut in, hitting a hard
shot past King but into the side netting.
A long upfield kick from Maldon keeper King forced Madden into making a save,
and there was a repeat performance shortly afterwards, the strong wind
frequently carrying the ball the full length of the pitch. King was in action
again, rushing out of his area to kick clear from Springer, who had run on to
Bostock’s long pass upfield. Ket was sent clear again, this time by Wightman,
and he turned the ball inside to Roberts whose shot went wide of the post.
Vincent also put Ket away but he mistimed his shot and King saved.
Bostock, appearing to be thoroughly enjoying himself, set up the first goal,
with a pass upfield to Springer, who set off along the wing, rounded Carter and
Burton and then played a low cross into the goalmouth, where DANNY GILL slipped
the ball into the net, for a land mark goal. Maldon were quick to come back,
Saunders taking a pass from Lee, turning quickly and firing in a vicious drive
which Madden dived full length to save.
Urchins second goal came when Roberts played a pass to Heale, who turned and
flicked the ball through to LEE SPRINGER, who ran on and hit his shot powerfully
into the net. It could easily have been three when King raced out of this goal
to clear from Gill, whose return shot was again saved by King, who turned the
ball out for a corner. Ket took the kick and King gathered at the second
attempt. John Wightman nearly added a third when he burst through the centre,
and forced King into a magnificent save.
The club shop manager complained bitterly at half time that he had missed both
goals as his staff had required his presence in the shop, though the main
talking point was the silver nike vapours worn by Steve Mensah. It was Madden
who set up the first attack after the interval, his long punt upfield reaching
Heale who raced away and won a free kick, which he took but his kick was too
long and Carter cleared. Casper came on and ghosted on to a Heale through pass,
King coming out to save at this feet. Maldon should have pulled a goal back when
Wilson crossed from the right, and Ayden came in at speed to head powerfully
down – too powerful in fact as the ball bounced up and over the crossbar.
Roberts at the other end went close, with a shot which he hooked over King but
also over the bar, and then Maldon came back once again, with Saunders being
thwarted by the joint efforts of Wightman and Mensah, who prevented what seemed
to be an almost certain goal opportunity.
Another long run by Heale, from Mensah’s intelligent pass, and he chipped the
cross over the defence and Casper came in but hit his shot too high and over the
bar. Gill made an opening for himself and King came way out of goal to kick
clear, whilst Wightman’s free kick to Adetayo saw the ball touched back again to
Wightman whose pinpoint cross reached Gill, whose header was saved by King for
what was possibly the save of the season, diving at full length to save right
under the bar.
Gill chased another through pass from Mensah and King came out turn the shot
round the post, and a minute later Wightman played Heale through and King came
out to save at his feet. Maldon almost pulled a goal back when Ayden’s solo run
ended with a magnificent save by Madden, who twisted sideways to deflect the
ball out for a corner, which was cleared after a prolonged goalmouth scramble,
and Urchins comfortably played out the remaining few minutes.
What was the land mark goal? It was Urchins first home goal in the Capital
League this season.
