Match Report by Tony Middleton
On a fine mild night, with the temperature
just dropping below zero, the start was delayed 13 minutes due to the late
arrival of one of the visiting team. Redbridge fielded a very strong team, and
included three ex-Urchins in Richard Wray, Sam Holloway and the ever popular
Andy Tomlinson. Urchins responded accordingly with their best Capital League
performance to date. The early play confined to midfield, due largely to two
very tight defences, and it was some time before either side was able to
threaten, although a corner from the left was narrowly headed over the bar by
Noakes. Hornchurch themselves moved forward confidently and created several
scoring opportunities, the best of which fell to Danny Gill, who ran past Ashman
and drew Wray off his line before chipping the ball over the keeper’s head. Wray
did very well to dart back and gather the ball as it rolled goalwards.
Redbridge could have opened the scoring shortly afterwards, when a well flighted
corner from the left was met by Holloway, whose header was directly narrowly
wide of the goal. Springer was frequently in the action in the middle of the
field, but was caught in possession on more than one occasion, although his shot
on the turn had Wray diving across goal to turn the ball around the post, with
Everett’s corner eluding everyone in a crowded goalmouth. A long upfield kick by
Madden found Everett whose lengthy run took him deep into the Redbridge half,
before he played the ball out to Williamson on the right, with Holloway racing
across to tackle.
The final chance of the half fell to Springer whose run took him past two
defenders, with the third defender, Junior Ashman, conceding a corner with a
timely tackle. The floodlight, which had for once behaved itself and stayed on,
went out as the teams returned to the field for the second half, and as the
temperature dropped slightly, so the frost began to whiten the grass, though the
playing surface remained soft. The only goal of the match came when Charlie Bull
had set Springer up well with a neat pass inside, but Springer’s solo run was
thwarted by Dauti, and the ball was played quickly upfield, where BRETT
KINNINMONT, with the home defence still coming back, was able to run on, and
drive the ball low past Madden for the only goal of the match. Darryl Plummer
came on and was a constant threat to the home defence, although Redbridge’s
shooting was wide of the mark, apart from one hard drive which cannoned back off
the bar.
Bradley Kite went close with a well placed shot, and Springer again went through
the middle but was crowded out, and it was Springer who had the final
opportunity, when he broke through and lofted the ball over Wray, but also over
the bar.
