GOAL - Fiddes |
It's probably safe to say that this was an opportunity missed. After such a
great result for us in the first game, earning a second chance on home turf, it
should have proved a tricky night for the Cambridge side with a big FA Cup match
only days away firmly in their minds.
Cambridge began by causing us problems from corner kicks
- one was bundled clear on 13 minutes and a second was cleared off the line
on 24 minutes - although we also had one or two half-chances, Russell Penn
lifting the ball over the bar after a Danny Shipp free-kick was half-blocked
in the 16th minute and a David Hicks shot from 20 yards going just over.
Micky Desborough made a terrific save from a John Stevenson free-kick in the
32nd minute but we were caught from the resulting corner, taken by
Stevenson, which was put away by Dave Sadler. Desborough again had to be
alert in the 36th minute as he pushed a low drive from Stevenson round the
post.
For a minute or two in the second half we showed some
promise with Cambridge keeper Duncan Roberts making a great save as
Jean-Michel Sigere tried to flick the ball past him but Cambridge doubled
their lead 5 minutes in. And it was a gift -
Nathan Phillip, on at
half time for Ian Cousins, attempting to head back to Desborough but only
succeeding in putting it past him. The third followed two minutes
later, defender Glen Fuff
driving home through a crowd of players from the edge of the area. We
continued to push forward and Shane Huke shot narrowly wide on 58 minutes
after a good move, and Sigere shot over a minute later after a nod on by
Greg Ngoye. Sadly our rare chances became even more rare after that
and although we had a good deal of possession the Cambridge defence was
barely troubled. The goalscoring was completed with 5 minutes to go
when Alex Fiddes swept
the ball home from 18 yards after a run down the right from Robbie Simpson.
