In the end it was a comfortable victory, but
for the first 25 minutes all indications were that it would be more of a
struggle.
A couple of incidents early on may have changed things. The first was a chance
for the visitors after only four minutes with Steve Hale putting a free header
over the bar from a Robert Saunders free-kick. The second was more
controversial. A ball over the defence in the 21st minute put O'Connor clear
and as Ashley Bayes came out to meet him he appeared to handle the ball outside
the area as the striker tried to lift the ball over him. The referee blew but
quickly consulted his assistant , who confirmed that Bayes' contact was inside
the area, and changed his decision
We took the lead, though, when
Kirk Jackson nodded home after a Darren Caskey shot from a Simon Wormull cross was
parried by keeper Michael Watkins and Maidenhead's defence, which had coped
well up to then, began to creak. Jackson and Wormull shot narrowly over a few
minutes later, quickly followed by a Lee Matthews header which hit the post. We
were soon 2-0 up though when
Wayne Purser made a good run into the penalty area and shot home from a wide
angle, catching everyone, including Watkins, a little by surprise.
Purser added to his tally just
before the break when a perfect Caskey cross was easy for him to head home from
6 yards.
A glancing header from Andy Jennings nearly reduced the deficit for the visitors
early in the second half but Purser came close to getting his third goal of the
evening when he was put clear by Jackson and slid the ball past Watkins who
safely collected as the ball came back off the post. Probably Maidenhead's
last chance to get back into the game came on the hour when Bayes had to pull
off a great save from a surging run and shot but the game was as good as over in
the 78th minute when Purser
finally completed his hat-trick. Substitute Danny Shipp saw his effort
cleared off the line with 15 minutes to go and a minute later headed against the
bar after Simon Weatherstone was put through and had his shot blocked by
Watkins. Shipp eventually found
the target on 80 minutes, heading in after Weatherstone headed a Damon Searle
far post cross back across goal and 3 minutes later
Shipp crossed from the bye-line
for Jean-Michel Sigere to head home for our 6th goal. Maidenhead didn't
stop plugging away for the rest of the game but, then again, neither did we.
Simon Weatherstone, perhaps unlucky not to register on the scoresheet, dragged a
shot narrowly wide with 6 minutes left and struck a shot against the post in
injury time.
